Lodge-Based Elk Hunts at Budge’s

Budge’s Wilderness Lodge is 40 miles from the nearest paved road and is surrounded by Wilderness. From here, it’s foot and horse traffic only. When elk hunting out of our main lodge, you’ll enjoy cozy log cabin accommodations. These are the original cabins built by Ed Budge in the 1920s. Of course we’ve made some upgrades since then, including simple bathrooms, lights, and heat. Between the new mattresses, the comfortable linens and a spectacular backcountry setting, you might feel like settling in long-term.

Hunters can expect to start their day with a hearty breakfast in the main lodge. Then, we’ll saddle up a before daylight and strike off into the wilderness. The game plan will vary based on the season and conditions, but our guides will put you in the best possible position for an opportunity. In some cases, we will return to the lodge for a simple lunch. Otherwise, we will provide a sack lunch for the day. When we return to the lodge after dark, a home-cooked dinner will be waiting. Then, you’re welcome to relax in the lodge or head back to your own cabin for some rest.

Lodge-based elk hunts include five full days of hunting, six nights accommodations and meals.

Wilderness Camp Elk Hunts

Budge’s has more than a dozen permitted camp locations scattered throughout our 150 square mile area. However, we never use more than a handful in a single season. This allows us to rotate camp locations, reduce pressure, and increase hunt quality. Inside the Wilderness area boundary, there is no motorized access. Hunters will ride to camp on one of our sturdy saddle horses or mules. And all gear will be taken by our hard-working pack animals. Once you’re at camp, hunting is done on foot. This makes it a good option for hunters who would rather not ride a horse out of the main lodge every day.

Our wilderness camps are simple yet comfortable, with spacious wall tents and wood burning stoves, lanterns, tables and chairs, along with large cots and thick pads. Bring your sleeping bag and personal hunting gear, and we’ll take care of the rest.

Hunters can expect to start their day with a hot breakfast and coffee. Then, we’ll set off into the wilderness for a day of hunting. In most cases, you will stay out all day and we will provide a sack lunch. Expect to return to camp after dark, where our crew will prepare a hot dinner before settling in for the night.

Wilderness camp elk hunts include five full days of hunting, seven nights of accommodations and meals. The first night will be spent in one of our cabins at the main lodge. The remaining nights are in the wilderness camp.
